Can We All Stop Pretending That Mental Health Isn’t Important Anymore?

Collaborative PostBy Collaborative PostSeptember 9, 20265 Mins Read

Can we all stop pretending that mental health isn’t important anymore? There are so many people out there at the moment who don’t put the time and the energy into their mental health, and people who think that those who do are wasting their time. Well, we can tell you for a fact that this is not the case at all. There are so many things that you should be doing in order to keep your mental health on the right track, and it doesn’t have to be anything drastic either.

We’re not in the old days where they thought a lobotomy would work to help those with mental illness, so you don’t have to worry about anything like that. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you can do to take care of your mental health, and perhaps we can all start acknowledging that it’s important, therefore doing the things that need to be done.

Acknowledge The Issue

First and foremost, you need to understand and acknowledge that there is an issue with your mental health. We know that this sounds super basic, but sometimes it’s the basic things that make the most difference. If you’re someone who up until now has decided that they’re going to push their mental health all the way down, pretending that it’s not an issue, pretending that there is nothing wrong, then you are going to struggle the most with this.

What you need to do is make sure that you acknowledge that you’re not currently feeling the way that is considered normal. Understand that there is something that is going on in your brain, even if you don’t understand it, and that needs to be taken care of. Your brain and your mind needs to be taken care of, but you also need to feel how you feel. You cannot push this all out and just hope that it stays there, because chances are all you’re doing is pushing them down, and eventually they are going to burst free.

Do You Have Something To Believe In?

Another thing that we want to talk about is whether you have something to believe in. Some people find that when they are struggling with their mental health, this is when they come to religion or something similar. They have something to believe in, even if they find it in the strangest of ways, and then they find that thing to hold onto, even when things get hard. Not everyone has one of these, and that’s okay, but if you do, or if you feel as though you could, then it might be helpful for what is to come.

Having something to believe in can often feel as though you have an extra lifeline, something pushing you in the right direction, and if that helps, then it helps.

Rely On Your Friends

We also want to talk about your friends, and how you should rely on them during this time. Especially when you’re down, especially when you’re not feeling like your normal self, this is when you need to rely on them the most. Now, we understand that there are a lot of people out there who think that this is when you should isolate yourself from your friends as you don’t want to ‘infect’ them with your feelings. First of all, this is not possible. Second of all, any friends that you have that are not accepting and supportive of you at your worst, do not deserve you at your best.

Everyone needs help from time to time, and you should be able to talk to your friends about how you are feeling. If you feel as though you cannot, then maybe it’s time to start thinking about whether these are the people that you should be spending your time with. Chances are, they’re going to want to help, and you should let them.

Get Some Help

Have you ever considered reaching out for professional help? There is still a stigma surrounding this, even though more people than ever are in therapy, so we understand why you might be hesitant. But, if you’re feeling embarrassed about it there is no reason for you to tell anyone in your life until you’re ready. We can assure you that mental health professionals are not going to judge you, as this is exactly what they are there for.

So, then it’s just a case of finding out what you think is going to work best for you. You can look into the debate between online therapy apps vs. working with a real therapist, seeing exactly what might work best for you. It’s true to say that you might want to try one, only to then find that the other one is the one that works best for you. It’s okay to try out new things to figure out what is the best solution for you.

Change Your Lifestyle

Finally, some lifestyle changes might be in order to help your mental health. For example, if you don’t exercise, then you should start making time to do so. If you don’t eat a balanced diet and make sure that you’re getting all of the vitamins and nutrients that you need, you need to start. It’s simple things like this that can sometimes make all of the difference in the world, which is why they are so important.

This is true of sleep especially. Sleep is massively important for the brain and your physical health, so try to ensure you’re getting those seven hours per night.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing to take care of your mental health. It’s not cool to pretend that your mental health doesn’t matter, and it’s not going to do you any favors in your life. Start doing what you need to do, trust us you will thank yourself for it.
