Wonder Woman Shares Queer Kiss in New DC Comic Series

Wonder Woman has been a staple in queer culture for some time, and now, a new DC comic series, “Dark Knights of Steel,” portrays the icon as a medieval warrior and an openly, explicitly queer woman. Otherwise known as Princess Diana of Themyscira, the famous superhero is in the new limited series, which imagines all of the brand’s heroes as medieval warriors. The comics center around an alternate universe, with Superman and Batman as brothers. Their father is murdered, and both heroes carry on to figure out who will assume the throne. Wonder Woman’s medieval character is introduced in the second issue of the series, which follows Lois Lane traveling to Themyscira to inform Zala-El—an Amazonian princess—that her father was murdered. A heartbroken Zala then collapses on the battlefield with Wonder Woman, who rushes to comfort her, followed by a passionate kiss and assurance that she will always be there to support her.

While the character’s queerness has been a long-standing rumor, and was later confirmed by DC Comics writer Greg Rucka in 2016, her relationship with Zala marks a rare reference of her sexuality being plainly depicted on the page of a comic book. DC has taken other stabs at inclusion, as recently as October 2021, revealing Jon Kent, Superman’s son, would come out as bisexual in Superman: Son of Kal-El #5; the issue hit stands in early November. They also added another nonbinary character to their rooster, with Kid Quick, who uses they/them pronouns, is from an alternate universe, and (as the name suggests) moves at super-fast speeds. They are slated to make their comic-book debut in C’s Merry Multiverse, a holiday-themed anthology due out this month, and they will later appear as The Flash in the forthcoming series, Future State: Justice League.
