David Raven, known by stage name Maisie Trollette and believed to be the oldest drag queen in the U.K., has died at age 91.

Raven was a trailblazer in the world of drag performance and a cherished figure within the LGBTQ+ community. Born in 1933 in St Ives, Cornwall, Raven’s journey from a small town upbringing to becoming Britain’s oldest performing drag queen is a testament to this resilience, talent, and unwavering commitment to authenticity.

Growing up in a time when societal norms were rigid and unforgiving, Raven faced the challenges of being a gay man in mid- 20th-century England. He moved to London in 1960, seeking acceptance and opportunities that were scarce in his hometown. It was in the vibrant streets of London that Raven discovered the transformative power of drag. Embracing the art form allowed him to express facets of his identity that had long been suppressed, leading to the birth of his alter ego, Maisie Trollette.

In the 1960s, Raven formed a dynamic duo with fellow performer James Court, and together they became known as the Trollettes. Their performances were characterized by sharp wit, musical talent, and a flair for the dramatic, quickly earning them a dedicated following. Maisie Trollette became a regular fixture at renowned venues such as The Black Cap and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, establishments that were sanctuaries for the LGBTQ+ community during times of widespread discrimination.

In 1972, Raven relocated to Brighton, a city known for its progressive attitudes and vibrant LGBTQ+ scene. His presence added a unique sparkle to the community, and he became deeply involved in local events and charitable endeavors. Maisie Trollette’s performances at the Brighton Dome and her unwavering support for the Brighton Rainbow Fund highlighted her dedication to uplifting and supporting her community.

The significance of Raven’s contributions were immortalized in the 2022 documentary Maisie: Britain’s Oldest Performing Drag Artist. The film offered an intimate glimpse into his life, capturing the essence of a performer who, even in his late 80s, continued to captivate audiences with his charisma and talent. The documentary not only celebrated his career but also shed light on the broader history and evolution of drag culture in the U.K. Maisie Trollette’s influence extended beyond the stage. She was a beacon of visibility and representation during eras when LGBTQ+ individuals were often marginalized. Raven’s courage to perform and live authentically inspired countless others to embrace their identities. By challenging these societal norms and pushing the boundaries, Maisie played a pivotal role in the gradual shift toward acceptance and equality.

Beyond his performances performances, Raven was deeply committed to philanthropy. He organized and participated in numerous charity events, raining funds for causes close to his heart, particularly those supporting HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBTQ+ youth. Additionally, he mentored emerging drag artists, offering guidance and support, ensuring that the art form he loved continued to thrive in the hands of a new generation.

Upon his passing in March 2025, tributes poured in from around the world. fellow performers, fans, and community members shared stories of how Maisie’s performances had touched their lives, showing her sharp humor and spirit. The Two Brewers, a venue where Maisie frequently performed, honored her memory, stating that she left behind a “legacy of joy, resilience, and unwavering dedication.”

David Raven’s journey as Maisie Trollette is a poignant reminder of the power of authenticity and the impact one individual can have on a community. Through decades of performance, advocacy, and unwavering presence, Maisie not only entertained but also educated and inspired. Raven’s legacy is woven into the fabric of the U.K.’s LGBTQ+ history, serving as both a foundation and a beacon for future generations.
