Gossip Grill, one of the very few lesbian bars in the U.S., was recently a victim of arson.
The bar, which is located in San Diego, California, had two of its patios set on fire, and while there were no injuries, the damage was rather devastating.
Unfortunately, the fire was allegedly intentionally started at Gossip Grill. According to a statement from the business, “Gossip Grill is one of the last few remaining queer women’s bars in the country. It breaks my heart knowing that someone intentionally tried to burn it down.”
Sadly, this is the harsh reality that our community is facing. Many queer businesses have been attacked in an attempt to spread the homophobic thoughts that still exist in this nation.
One prime example of this is the Club Q bar in Colorado Springs. Anderson Lee Aldrich was sentenced to life in prison after shooting and killing five people in the bar.
Such instances ignite the idea that our politicians must implement protections to our loving queer businesses, as many of them are at risk of heinous crimes.
Luckily, the fire department was quick to put out the fire, preventing any permanent damage to the bar.
Queer businesses are a place we call home in our community. These businesses provide us with the love and support that many of us are in need of in these cruel times where hatred still stands strong.
As a nation, we can no longer lay back and accept that this is a new reality. Accountability is important, as that is what will keep our community safe and free from harm, we have a right to be free. We have a right to be heard.
The Gossip Grill has asked their supporters to show up to their bar and continue to show their support. The bar has had an outpouring of support from the San Diego community, giving this bar the strength it needs to operate stronger than ever.
