Pop Phenomenon Chappell Roan Meets Performers from Drag Syndrome
Chappell Roan had an endearing meet-and-greet with drag queens with Down syndrome after her ‘Heart-felt’ performance at the Reading and Leeds Festival. In the viral video posted to their social media, the colorful group of performers, Drag Syndrome, walks into the venue where the accomplished musician eagerly awaits.
Chappell Roan speaks to each member of the group, inquiring about individual details of their outfits, throwing her head back joyously, and laughing as the performers crack jokes. One performer compliments the color of Chappell Roan’s vibrant red hair. Roan gives out high fives and says she’s “so glad y’all came” before the group takes a photo together.
As the name implies, Drag Syndrome, founded in 2018, is for people with Down syndrome. As defined by the NHS in the U.K., Down syndrome is when a person is born with an extra chromosome, which can happen by chance due to “a change in the sperm or egg before you’re born.” Down syndrome leads to learning disabilities that can vary from person to person.
The group members, unfortunately, are no strangers to online hate. In response to online trolls in 2023, Lady Mercury passionately said in a statement on X: “We do need to be respected by other people. I know people might think because we’ve got Down syndrome, it’s like a sick illness, but it’s not… Drag Syndrome is about dancing with a syndrome. You’re dancing your heart out and just trying to earn respect. Some people might see it as a target they would like to pin on you.”
Drag Syndrome posted the meet and greet with Chappell Roan to their Instagram, captioning it: “The most incredible meeting with the gracious @chappellroan ???????? what a stunning experience. Thank you for being incredibly generous, we love you forever.”
