The Log Cabin Republicans are officially dropping the “T” from their advocacy, announcing that the conservative organization will now focus specifically on lesbian, gay, and bisexual issues.
Founded in the 1970s, and infamous for their confusing identity as a gay but conservative organization, Log Cabin Republicans is one of the country’s most prominent organizations representing LGBTQ+ conservatives. In 2015, the group expanded its mission to include transgender rights. More than a decade later, it is reversing that decision. This is not a surprising move given the current stance of the Trump administration and MAGA Republicans towards the trans community.
President Ross Hemminger said the organization will now identify as an “LGB advocacy organization.” He said the change followed discussions among members and was driven largely by disagreements surrounding transgender youth, schools, gender-affirming care, and sports. This mirrors rhetoric that Colorado gay Republicans such as Gays Against Groomers usually spout. Such rhetoric usually paints trans people as mentally unstable or predatory.
Transgender conservatives can still join the organization, but transgender rights will no longer be part of its national advocacy agenda, leading one to wonder why a trans person would want to be a member of such a group.
The decision has drawn criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates, who argue that separating transgender people from broader LGBTQ+ advocacy further divides the community at a time when transgender rights remain the subject of political battles across the country.
It also furthers the harmful and pervasive narrative that trans folks are separate from the rest of the community and a disposable or radical part of the community that can be cut off rather than a critical piece of the queer world. Hateful rhetoric from organizations like the Log Cabin Republicans further seeks to divide Americans and the LGBTQ+ community.
