Jamie Lloyd’s production of Evita has officially set a date and venue to join the players of Broadway.
Beginning its run on London’s West End, Evita wowed audiences at the London Palladium, though not always for the right reasons. The most controversial aspect of the production unfortunately became its hallmark. Eva Peron’s powerful solo, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” was performed outside on the show’s balcony to passersby while patrons—many of whom had spent hundreds of dollars—watched inside on a screen. Thankfully this has been remedied for the Broadway transfer.
Lloyd states, “”When we started discussing a New York production, it became apparent that our Palladium staging of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina would not be possible. I am really excited to explore a new idea, made especially for Broadway.”
Among the issues discussed when figuring out how to stage the transfer was, of course, the safety of lead actress Rachel Zegler (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves). Zegler headlined the West End production and will be making the transfer over to Broadway along with the show.
Evita creator Andrew Lloyd Webber chimes in, stating, “The one thing that absolutely cannot happen is what we did in London on the balcony. We can’t do that in New York. I mean, something awful could happen. We have gun laws in Britain.”
Evita tells the story of Eva Peron (Zegler), a woman fueled by ambition, who rose from poverty to become the most powerful woman in Latin America. A beacon of hope to some and a threat to others—even several years after her death! —her star shone brightly as she captured the heart of a nation. Featuring notable songs “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Oh What a Circus,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” “Buenos Aires,” and the number that won Madonna a 1997 Oscar, “You Must Love Me.”
The West End production took home several awards for its 2025 run including two Olivier Awards—the British equivalent of a Tony Award—for Best Choreography and Best Actress for Zegler.
“Performing Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s brilliant show in London was a dream come true, but being able to partner once again with Jamie to bring Evita to Broadway is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” states Zegler. ”I can’t wait to perform for my home, New York City.”
Evita will play The Winter Garden Theatre starting in February 2027. Previews will begin February 27, 2027, and opening night is set for March 25, 2027.
Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Monday, June 1.
