Today marks the soft launch of Moira Rose’s favorite season, what is known to the rest of the world as “Awards Season.”
This morning the official nominations for the Emmy Awards were announced. More or less the proverbial black sheep of the awards season siblings, the Emmy Awards are set to be broadcast Monday, September 14. Several months before it’s more popular and oftentimes more drunk—We’re looking at you, Golden Globes—older siblings.
After the campaign efforts of more than 500 actors/actresses/television broadcasts, the official nominees were announced today. Along with some surprising twists. The new Apple TV Horror-Comedy Widow’s Bay came away with a whopping 19 nominations. Despite premiering on the streaming service with little fanfare earlier this year, I don’t even remember ever seeing a promo for it.
Alongside several of what I would call standard nominees—The Pitt, Paradise, Hacks and so on—at this point, we have several newcomers sprinkled in.
HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, focuses on the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, as they wander through Westeros while the Targaryen dynasty rule the Iron Throne. It is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Music Composition, Outstanding Sound Editing, and Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-fi costumes.
Hulu’s Housemaid’s Tale prequel, The Testaments, brings in one nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama series for series lead Chase Infiniti.
HBO’s Task follows a troubled FBI Agent (Mark Ruffalo) in suburban Philadelphia who leads a task force to stop a string of violent robberies carried out by an unassuming family man (Tom Pelphrey). It came away with nominations for Ruffalo and Pelphrey in the acting categories as well as nominations for Outstanding writing and directing.
Apple TV’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles follows 19-year-old Margo (Elle Fanning), a naive community college student who gets pregnant after an affair with her married English professor, Mark (Michael Angarano). When Mark vanishes, Margo chooses to keep the baby. Faced with single motherhood, unemployment, and eviction, she launches an [OnlyFans] account to support her son, aided by her unconventional parents: a former beauty-obsessed waitress, Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer), and a recovering addict/ex-pro wrestler, Jinx (Nick Offerman). The series comes away with 5 nominations. Acting nominations for Fanning, Offerman, and Pfeiffer and nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Makeup.
Hulu’s Wonder Man is a Marvel title focused on Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling Hollywood actor. The series is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
HBO’s highly raved about medical drama The Pitt did not experience any form of sophomore slump. The drama came away with 25 nominations for its second season.
The HBO comedy Hacks also ends strong as it garnered 24 nominations for its final season. Though, Euphoria did come out weak in its final season, not only receiving harsh reviews from viewers, but also only coming out of its tenure with a mere 3 nominations.
The Limited or Anthology series category is stacked featuring popular titles such as Love Story, All Her Fault and The Beast in Me.
Other notable nominations include Taylor Swift’s Eras tour final show on Disney Plus, Wicked: One Wonderful Night, and the one-episode revival of The Muppet Show.
Notable snubs include Stranger Things, no Taylor Sheridan projects nominated (sacrilege! Michelle Pfeiffer did not act her butt off in The Madison for this!), The Amazing Race, and HBO’s Industry. I’d also like to add in my proverbial two cents and express my astonishment that Constance Zimmer was nominated for Love Story over Grace Gummer.
