Sofia Monroy Debut EP ‘Telenovela’ Release

Sofia Monroy is an artist, singer, and songwriter who is known for her impressive live performances, beautiful visuals, and bilingual, authentic lyrics, cultivating in pop, influenced by R&B, and soul music. 

Monroy was born in Mexico City where she resided for two years before she and her family moved to Luleå, a small town in northern Sweden. It was this upbringing, where telenovelas were shown constantly on TV, that inspired Monroy to release her debut EP, ‘Telenovela’ which came out on May 12th. 

While Monroy’s own telenovela contains her personal stories and experiences, it is analogous to things typically found in Latin American telenovelas such as; drama, jealousy, comedy, and sadness, among other things. “My own Telenovela is sprinkled with humor and of course drama, but it also deals with my experience with minority stress, cultural identity, and mental illness.” The EP, she notes, is a representation of who she is as an artist, “dramatic, storytelling, and colorful!”

The last few years for this artist have been decisive, as Monroy has been increasingly experimenting with both Spanish and English musical expression while still incorporating Scandinavian melodies throughout her music, enhancing it in soulful ways.

The artist’s debut Ep ‘Telenovela’ comes out only years after her premiere as an independent artist in 2019 with the release of her single ‘Cautious’, which gained her major attention from across the globe. Her latest single, ‘Control’ was picked up on rotation on Swedish national radio, and mentioned by Sweden’s second biggest morning show, SVT Morgonstudion, where she was interviewed and premiered the music video.
