Shooting at Evergreen High School Leaves the Suspect Dead, 2 Injured
9NEWS reports the student suspected of shooting two other students and himself at Evergreen High School on Wednesday has died of his self-inflicted injuries, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Denver7 reports all three students were transported to CommonSpirit St. Anthony Health Center.
Dr. Brian Blackwood, head of the trauma unit at St. Anthony’s Hospital, said on Wednesday afternoon that one of the students had injuries that are not life-threatening, and the other two were in critical condition.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, Jacki Kelley, says there is no longer an active threat. She stated that a fourth person may have been transported to a hospital from the Evergreen area in connection with the shooting, but she couldn’t confirm any additional details regarding their injury.
Denver7‘s story reports that the male suspect’s weapon was a revolver during the shooting, which happened on school grounds both inside and outside the building. At a press conference, Kelley explained how the first 911 call was received at 12:24 p.m., with law enforcement quickly reporting to the scene.
“We’re law enforcement. Police and fire just show up. When you hear the words ‘active shooter,’ and you know that there are kids involved, we’re coming,” says Kelley.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis says in a statement that he’s monitoring the situation.
“State Troopers are supporting local law enforcement in responding to this situation,” Polis says. “Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”
Jeffco Schools Superintendent Tracy Dorland expressed her sadness and rage at the press conference following the shooting.
“I am devastated to share this news with you, and I’m also angry that no child should ever face this kind of danger, and no community should be asked to absorb this kind of pain,” Dorland says.
