In an interview with The Irish Times, queer singer King Princess called Harry Potter author, JK Rowling, a “demon of a woman.” Since her debut in 2018, King Princess has been very vocal about her gay identity, and more recently came out as genderqueer—using she/they pronouns.
According to PinkNews, talking about their new album, Girl Violence, King Princess was discussing how being in the LGBTQ+ community in America right now is a “tough bag,” before admitting that they love how the Harry Potter represents “queer themes.” They state, “It’s about choice and difference and finding your community and chosen family, these are all very queer themes,” before tackling the irony of JK Rowling being the author.
Since 2019, Rowling has been an obnoxiously loud trans-exclusionary radical feminist, or TERF. She’s been documented spreading anti-trans propaganda, supporting transphobic “activists,” and even donating to anti-trans organizations.
In the interview, after calling Rowling a demon, King Princess claims, “You know what the irony is? She wrote eight books about children having autonomy and the ability to make their own choices, which is possibly the most trans thing I’ve ever heard. She could have had these books go down as some of the greatest young-adult writing in the world – all she had to do was shut the f**k up.” She elaborates that despite these views “spitting in the space” of the fandom, that they still love Harry Potter.
Beyond the Harry Potter talk, King Princess discusses more of her album, Girl Violence. They describe it as “almost a ‘ha ha’ to toxic masculinity.” That, “in a world full of physical violence, anger, war and hyper-masculinity, this is the really crazy violence that’s under the surface, that’s subliminal and emotional and thoughtful.”
Girl Violence released on September 12, and is King Princesses’s third album, and will begin touring in the UK and in Ireland later in 2025.
