Hundreds protest outside of ICE building in Durango after two children and their father were detained, according to The Colorado Sun. The protesters chanted for hours Tuesday as ICE separated the children, ages 12 and 15, from their father.
Fernando Jaramillo Solando was pulled over near a mobile home park at the edge of town, says Enrique Orozco-Perez, executive director of Compañeros, Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center. Solando’s daughter, Jana Michel Jaramillo Patiño, 12, and son, Kewin Daniel Patiño Bustamante, 15, are asylum-seekers from Columbia. They have lived in Colorado more than 18 months and have no criminal record. Their asylum case remains active.
“We respectfully request that your offices contact ICE immediately to advocate for the release of Mr. Jaramillo and his two minor children while their asylum case proceeds. The family poses no flight risk and has substantial community support and housing in place,” says Compañeros.

The protest began the afternoon of Monday October 27 outside the ICE building. After being peaceful, the protest escalated Tuesday as more than 200 people blocked an area around the office. At least seven ICE agents pepper-sprayed the crowd, says Franci Stagi. The agents forced their way through a chain and dragged protesters, reports the Durango Herald.
“The point is to get this as far and wide as possible, so people can see the cruelty that’s happening in real time and see that kids who are just trying to get an education, which is their their right for living in this country that’s being trampled on,” Orozco-Perez says. “We’re literally taking away kids being kids.”
ICE agents arrested at least 81 children under 18 years old in Colorado from January 20 to July 28 2025 under the Trump administration, according to data obtained from ICE and published by the Deportation Data Project. Under the Biden administration in 2024, ICE arrested only one child in this age group during the same period.
