Five F@!king Films That Are Definitely NSFW

By Nico Stoerner

INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR.

While the charming James Franco continues to play with sexual innuendo in his more mainstream films, this documentary doesn’t beat around the bush. Inspired by the gay S&M footage that was cut from the 1980 film Cruising, directors Franco and Travis Mathews collaborate to re-create the footage and explore the unfettered culture of the gay leather community. Juxtaposing candid interviews about the filmmaking process with uninhibited and unsimulated gay sex, this steamy cockumentary explores sexuality and art simultaneously.

STRANGER BY THE LAKE

Rather than serving up a murder mystery, Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake offers audiences the murder upfront and in plain sight by the killer Michel (Christophe Paou). The remainder of the film, however, is rooted in the mysterious realm of witness-come-mistress Franck’s (Pierre Deladonchamps) attraction and acceptance of his sociopathic paramour. Sexy, strange, and deliberate, this film is an interesting critique of human nature and social interaction.

VELVET GOLDMINE

Set in the 70s during the rise of glam-rock, this film tells the story of the rise, fall, and resurrection of Brian Slade (played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers). Slade’s stardom ends abruptly after faking his own murder on stage, after which he dropped off the public’s radar. Following the investigation of a British journalist (played by Christian Bale) as he searches for his childhood hero, this film challenges viewers to consider the real plight of superstars…and comes complete with a sex scene between Ewan McGregor and Christian Bale.

BOY CULTURE

Fast paced and packed with killer one-liners, Boy Culture follows the life of male prostitute X (Derek Magyar) who’s uninterested in sex unless he’s getting paid. Over the course of the film he learns about life, love, and acceptance from Gregory—one of his best customers played by Patrick Bauchau—who regularly hires him for companionship, but refuses to have sex until they share a mutual attraction. An interesting commentary on relationships in the age of Grindr, this film offers an entertaining story of self-discovery punctuated by sexy scenes.

FOCUS/REFOCUS

Raging Stallion Studios’ ambitious (although heavily edited for retail) thriller is definitely NSFW…and it’s on Netflix. Joe (Cole Streets) is a twenty-something sex addict with a penchant for penis and an inability to restrain himself that finds himself in a “sticky situation,” (c’mon, you know you were thinking it). A killer is on the loose in San Francisco and men continue to turn up dead. Joe’s sexual encounters continue to reveal more about the killer as he finds himself on a sexual adventure that he’ll be lucky to survive. Think of this as soft-core porn meets film noir.
