On Valentine’s Day, former Gucci Mane-signed Rapper “Lil Wop” announced to the world his bisexuality via an Instagram post.
There was some speculation amongst the rapper’s associates and fans in the comment section because many of them believed that Lil Wop’s account was hacked.
“Don’t believe the hype; he hacked” the rapper XANMAN responded.
However, the rapper, made a follow-up post two days later confirming that there was no mistake or hacking of his account—leaving his fans and spectators stunned.
Lil Wop’s collogue Xanman retracted his earlier statement, once Wop had made it clear there was no error or hack: “Never mind” Xanman says. Following the retraction, Wop was celebrated by fans and some close friends of his via his comment section:
“Love you Louie! Proud to be your friend got your back 4 life!,” “You’re a king,” and “slay,” to name some of the positive reception of the coming out news.
Unfortunately, not all his fans, hip hop heads, and social media onlookers were elated about his coming out announcement. Some spectators blatantly spewed homophobic remarks at the rapper Lil Wop.
“What the fuck is going on?” one commentor asks. Another commentor stated that Lil Wop must have mismanaged his finances and accused him of being a industry gimmick: “You must have messed up the money they fronted you.”
One user alluded that being bisexual doesn’t mean that one should dress feminine: “You don’t have to dress like that to be bisexual.” Some fans have vowed to delete his music and have decided to no longer support the rapper: “Stop bruh, imma bout to delete all of your music.”
Hip-hop culture is notorious for glamorizing hyper toxic masculinity and mistreatment to marginalized communities such as women and the LGBTQ people. Historically in hip hop and in African-American culture, being an open member of the LGBTQ community is often met with strife and abandonment.
But, on the flip side, Lil Wop’s coming out demonstrates that the LGBTQ community accepts and embraces him with open arms as he redefines hip hop by making the genre an open and inclusive space for everyone.
