“Transgender women are Wonder Women. End of Story” claims a tweet from Lynda Carter, actress for one of the Wonder Woman renditions.
According to LGBTQ Nation, her fight has taken a turn towards acknowledging transgender women, continuing a streak of fighting alongside the LGBTQ.
And she’s not backing down.
Q Voice News says Bia, a trans, Black woman, is introduced in the series Nubia & the Amazons through one Well of Souls. This is a place that reincarnates and immortalizes women who “have died from the terror of a Man’s World.”
The character Bia says, “I don’t know how to explain it yet, but this exact moment feels like my soul has desired it long before I came here,” before choosing the name Bia, as choosing a new moniker is customary when reborn among the Amazonians.
Comic writers Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala, confirm that Bia is not just “a box to tick” and plays a heartbeat-vital role to the series as a whole, “Just as Black, trans women are important to us in real life.” It sounds like Carter is truly hoping to work towards making bridges and breaking down walls through the compelling art of storytelling.
An observation from Screen Rant posits “With violence against the transgender community sadly rising in the United States, readers are allowed to link the two elements of the story, presuming Bia was one victim of such violence in her previous life.” Black women represent the majority of targets for violent attacks on the trans community.
As Advocate observes, this news of Bia follows suit another inclusive stride taken by DC Comics with the new Superman, Jon Kent, being announced as a bisexual, kissing a male love interest, Jay Nakamura.
Ultimately, the story of Bia shows that all women are truly welcome among the Amazonians, and further confirms the message that all should understand at one point in their lives, trans women are women.
