Watch Wheelchair Sports Camp’s New Single ‘Denim’
Three words … Wheelchair Sports Camp. Denver’s “biggest smallest band,” Wheelchair Sports Camp combines raunchy humor with a musical hip-hop aura unlike any other. And their newest music video, “Denim” keeps their wild legacy alive.
The band is led by 53-pound, three-foot, six-inch Kalyn Rose Heffernan. The tiny queer rapper turns heads from her wheelchair with her profane sense of humor. Known for her viral YouTube video “My Vagina Ain’t Handicapped Freestyle,” Heffernan unabashedly drops beats and facts. The rest of the jazz-hop trio consists of Abigail “Abi” McGaha Miller and her older brother and drummer, Isaac. Known for their noisy experimentation, the band’s DIY roots have exploded into a plethora of forms, from theater to performance art and permanent installations, public television and film, politics, and even prison tours, Wheelchair Sports Camp is quite the revolution.
Each of their works is unique, undefinable, and unforgettable. Every delivery is fascinating and has resulted in the band receiving a variety of awards and recognitions in the Denver area. Their new music video, “Denim,” is no exception to their unparalleled style. Released June 14, the band returns to their musical roots with a slutty circus freak show-style single.
The cast of “Denim” features the RAREBYRD$ as freaks alongside ringleader Diminutive Dom whipping Greggy the Gimp. The video is a sexy slideshow of Denver nostalgia. The trip down Broadway for top shelf denim depicts cameos by Skank Azar and Cocky’s Auto. Filmed by Jeremy Pape, audiences get flashes of custom fits, adaptive sex toys, cars, and lots and lots of denim. With Jeanie Schroder and Tom Hagerman of Devotchka on Tuba and strings/accordion, mixing done by Gloria Kaba, and mastering done by Heba Kadry, the single is quite the masterpiece.
“Denim” is a mere glimpse into the jaw-dropping work of Wheelchair Sports Camp. It is nothing short of immaculate to be able to see a queer, disabled, and sex-positive band create music and spit their shit unapologetically. For all your denim needs, call CALL 833-DENIM69.
