Virtual Drag Show to Raise Money for LGBTQ Youth

Performers from across the country are joining forces this Valentine’s Day with The Dru Project to raise funds for LGBTQ youth scholarships in a virtual variety show called Gun Violence Is Still A Drag.

Featuring Drag Race‘s Thorgy Thor and Denali Foxx, Queer Eye‘s original culture vulture Jai Rodriguez, and several others, viewers are invited to grab brunch, plant themselves in front of a screen, and enjoy a hilarious compilation of “love” songs performed by their favorite faces.

“LGBTQ performers have always been among our fiercest supporters,” said Sara Grossman, The Dru Project’s communications director. “While we had every hope of being back in Los Angeles for this year’s show, we are excited that the virtual setting has allowed performers and viewers from across the country to join us. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than showing love for queer young people and helping blaze their paths to success?”The Dru Project is a nonprofit organization founded in the wake of the tragic 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting honoring Christopher “Drew” Leinonen, one of the 49 victims of the massacre. A licensed mental health professional, Leinonen was passionate about creating spaces for queer youth to live authentically.

To date, the organization has authored the country’s most comprehensive classroom guide for Gay Straight Alliance student group, reached over 400,000 people worldwide to advocate for queer youth, and has awarded over $75,000 in college scholarships to LGBTQ leaders.

We set out five years ago to keep the best parts of Drew alive,” Grossman said. “His compassion, his tenacity, and his belief in a world that celebrates queer young people and gives them the support they need to thrive. The Dru Project was born out of love for our best friend and has grown into a force for good thanks to the support of the LGBTQ community across the globe. We are honored to be working alongside the cast and crew to give more young people a shot at their wildest dreams.”This year’s fundraiser is sponsored by Ziggy’s Naturals, CODE-mkg., and LGBTQ employee resource groups at Starz & Lionsgate and A+E.
