Two California Companies that Grow Sustainable Cannabis
Coastal Sun and Jetty Extracts are two California-based companies at the forefront of the clean, sustainable weed movement. OCAL and EnvirOganic certifies that products made by these companies use sun-grown, “comparable-to-organic” cannabis.
An investigation by The Times found “alarming levels of pesticides” within cannabis products on dispensary shelves. These pesticides sometimes include DDT, a chemical which combats harmful insects and minimizes crop loss. As remnant of DDT, DDE, can stay in soils and is classified to be a probable human carcinogen. Additionally, many companies, in an effort to produce high amounts of cannabis, have historically used high amounts of water and energy such as 24-hour lighting systems and air conditioning. These standard practices have increased demands on fossil fuels and, in the U.S., annually produce over 15 million tons of greenhouse gasses.
Both Coastal Sun and Jetty Extracts use sun-grown cannabis rather than current lighting modules. This process takes advantage of the full-spectrum light the sun generates and allows plants to develop robust immune systems. Furthermore, this developed growth has another benefit. These cannabis products have nutrient rich, natural, and healthy terpene profiles with higher cannabinoid potency. Harnessing sunlight for growth is more cost effective and sustainable which could replace industry standard, high electricity-dependent, four-plant lighting modules.
Santa Cruz-based Coastal Sun uses regenerative farming to restore microbiology back into cultivated soil. Cover cropping, companion planting, hedgerows, insectaries, and grazing animals create balanced, biodiverse ecosystems and regenerate the soil.
Jetty Extracts produce solventless products such as live rosin concentrates and vape cartridges. The San Diego-founded company uses sun-grown cannabis harvested at peak freshness and flash freezes leaves in-field to preserve the diverse terpene and cannabinoid makeup of their different strains.
Jetty Extracts CEO Ron Gershoni and Coastal Sun’s CFO Darren Story have created companies who believe in taking responsibility for consumer safety and implementing more sustainable practices. They implore other operators to share in this belief and move towards a wholistic approach towards the cannabis production.
