In a disheartening development to an already heartbreaking story, the fatal shooting that took place at the Venture-N gay bar in Tucson, Arizona, has been declared a hate crime by the authorities. This news broke after the police searched the home of the shooter, 44 year-old Ousman Ceesay, and found a note suggesting that the shooting was “a targeted attack motivated by hate toward the LGBTQIA+ community.” This development comes as the bar is doing its best to reopen and move forward from the incident.
The shooting occurred Monday, August 31, shortly after midnight, when Ousman Ceesay confronted two bar patrons in the parking lot. Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, age 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, age 33, were both shot and died at the scene. After shooting the two men, Ceesay shot himself and was pronounced dead at the hospital. On Ceesay’s person, the police found a list of LGBTQ+ businesses in the area of the shooting, suggesting that Ceesay had intended to continue the violence throughout the Tucson area.
The classification of the shooting as a hate crime confirms what was suspected from the beginning. Ousman Ceesay’s actions were planned, targeted, and would have continued had he not taken his own life instead. Homophobia is still a fact of life in America, and lax gun safety laws throughout much of the country exacerbate the issue, making tragedies like this a grimly common occurrence. Violent and exclusionary rhetoric from the increasingly extreme right wing of our political sphere contributes as well, demonizing and scapegoating vulnerable communities and emboldening dangerous and unhinged individuals to carry out extreme actions.
While the times are dark, the LGBTQ+ community remains strong. We will not allow acts of hate and bigotry to force us into hiding. We will not forget who we are and who we love. In this way, we honor the lives and memories of Vincent Siqueiros and Cameron Capara, who were taken from us too soon. As we move forward, be sure to check in on your loved ones, and to carry the spirit of love and acceptance wherever you go.
