Peggy Rajski Replaces Amit Paley as Trevor Project CEO
Some changes are happening with the Trevor Project, as Amit Paley has been removed as CEO.
The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization focusing on suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. This year, so many anti-trans and anti-queer bills have been passed, so The Trevor Project has had an enormous explosion in calls and texts, going from 200 to 2000 calls on average. Tragedy is never good, but it’s good that organizations such as The Trevor Project exist to help.
However, with that growth came questions about how prepared Paley was for the job. In an open letter signed by over 200 employees, they expressed these concerns, as well as concerns about how prepared he was for the massive surge of growth and employee wellbeing, as well as his involvement with Purdue Pharma, a company that deals in oxycontin. Many employees said that their needs were not being met, specifically, and that Paley had either, “inability or unwillingness to address the needs of the staff, including transgender staff members who felt their specific needs weren’t being met.”
In a statement to Teen Vogue, the company said, “The Trevor Project is currently facing a period of transition, rethinking how to sustainably grow our 24/7 crisis services to respond to the public health crisis of LGBTQ youth suicide and address the mental health disparities impacting these youth.”
In a statement to Them, Paley says, “During my time as CEO, our community increased ten-fold and we launched Trevor’s global expansion, including the start of life-saving services in Mexico last month,” he continued. “We launched a 24/7 digital crisis service, created a ground-breaking research department, expanded the world’s largest campaign to end conversion therapy, and grew our team from 50 employees to over 500.”
As Amit Paley steps away, Trevor Project co-founder Peggy Rajski will take his place as CEO.
