Trans Woman Wins Discrimination Case Against Christian Baker

Colorado’s conservative, Christian baker and bigot is at it again. Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cake Shop continues to make headlines for LGBTQ discrimination.

A Colorado Judge in Denver ruled that, when Phillips refused to make Autumn Scardina (a transgender woman) her birthday cake, arguing that it violates his religious beliefs to bake the cake, this was an illegal move. Back in June 2017, Scardina requested the dessert to be frosted blue on the outside and pink on the inside, which was previously approved by Phillips. Shortly after, she explained what the colors symbolized, along with the fact she’s a transgender woman. Upon gathering this information, Phillips allegedly revealed to Scardina, he “did not make cakes for ‘sex changes.’”

In his decision-making process, District Judge A. Bruce Jones writes, “The anti-discrimination laws are intended to ensure that members of our society who have historically been treated unfairly, who have been deprived of even the everyday right to access businesses to buy products, are no longer treated as ‘others.’”

Phillips is a repeat offender when it comes to taking discrimination cases to court for religious exemption. The first offense was back in 2012, when he refused to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple. He claimed his religious beliefs were preventing him from creating and endorsing the same-gender couple’s wedding cake. Phillips was found to have violated the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, which he inevitably appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. This action led him to receive a partial victory, but it was never stated Christians don’t have to follow anti-discrimination laws.

The infamous, anti-LGBTQ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom are backing up Phillips yet again, claiming they’ll appeal the case since “radical activists and government officials are targeting artists like Jack because they won’t promote messages on marriage and sexuality that violate their core convictions.”
