Trans Formations Project Demands Action to Support Trans Community
The Trans Formations Project, a trans-led, grassroots nonprofit, called for the community to take action in order to protect and support the transgender community, in a press release issued on November 20, the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. “The Trans Formations Project calls on all whom who claim conscience to fight for a world where no transgender or nonbinary person will be targeted because of who they are or how they pursue their happiness,” the organization states.
The Trans Formations Project focuses on informing about and advocating against anti-trans legislative movements in the United States, according to the organization’s website. This includes bills and measures such as the recent policy introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson to ban transgender people from using some Capitol bathrooms that correspond with their gender. With the map available on the project’s website, the organization shows that 48 anti-trans legislative bills were passed across the U.S. this year, with the most being six bills passed in Utah.
In the press release, the Trans Formations Project said that 26 states currently ban transgender medical care for minors, which leads to poor health outcomes for transgender youth including elevated rates of suicidality and a significant increase in suicide attempts among transgender and nonbinary youth in states where anti-trans bills have been passed, a trend revealed in the findings of a 2024 article published by the Nature Human Behavior Journal.
“In this time, we face incredible odds and incredible harms,” says Sam Mendum-Purdy, co-founder and co-executive director of the Trans Formations Project. “But our strength, and our shield, has always come from our community. We continue to learn so much from our ancestors, especially our sisters of color. They’ve long shown us that, regardless of what happens, we can and will survive. No one can ever take who we are away from us.”
