The Dru Project, a nonprofit organization advocating for LGBTQ+ youth, has recently released the second edition of their GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) guide on April 11. The guide is an educational resource and advocacy tool for Florida LGBTQ+ student alliances and clubs.
Named in honor of Christopher Andrew “Drew” Leinonen, The Dru Project aims to ensure that all young people can live their authentic lives free from fear, violence, and discrimination. Drew created the first gay-straight alliance in 2002 at Seminole High School earning him the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award from the St. Pete Holocaust Museum.

Originally launched in 2017 and downloaded in 14 different countries and 48 states to date, the updated guide builds upon the foundation of the first including an explanation of gender identities, a timeline of contemporary queer history, vocabulary and terminology, fun quizzes, and prompts to generate conversation within a GSA club, breakdowns of how to create informative panels, and ideas for community outreach activities.
“The second edition of our GSA guide marks a crucial milestone in our mission to support LGBTQ+ youth and their allies,” says Sara Grossman, president of The Dru Project. “We are proud to present a resource that not only reflects the rich diversity of our community but also provides practical tools and insights for fostering safe and affirming spaces in schools.”
There are a few key updates in the newest GSA guide edition that focuses on the needs and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. These include highlighting issues involving intersectionality of race, national origin, immigration status, religions, socioeconomic status, ability, and more. The guide provides actionable strategies for advocacy and support as well as tools for establishing inclusive environments that promote acceptance and understanding.

The Dru Project also provides scholarships and grants, giving away over $250,000 for GSAs and out-of-work drag entertainers! GSAs are needed now more than ever as The Dru Project supports the organization of LGBTQ+ youth protesting against Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bills. This years applications for scholarships and student loan grants are currently open, prioritizing students who need to move from states with heavy anti-LGBTQ+ legislation to ones that will protect their safety.
The Dru Project encourages educators, students, and community leaders to utilize its guide and comprehensive resources for promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity in educational settings. The guide is available for free to download on The Dru Project’s official website.
