Vancouver pop duo Tegan and Sara are back with “Our Year,” their first release since their 2022 album, Crybaby. Originally released on September 25, 2026, the song features collaborations with Vancouver-based alt-pop singer Lights and electronic-dance producer Felix Cartal. The official video for the track, directed by Kyle S. Lee, is also available to watch.
In the early stages, Tegan sent the demo to Cartal, who connected with it immediately. “It had that classic Tegan and Sara feel I’ve always loved—unafraid to be a little cheeky, but totally genuine and refreshing,” Cartal said. Vancouver artist Lights was asked to join them after Cartal stepped in to produce. “We were hoping to get Lights on the track,” Tegan said. “The moment she came on board, it was clear we were onto something special.”
It certainly was special for Lights, a longtime fan of the duo and a close friend of Cartal. “This feels like one of those milestone creative experiences you’d be proud to leave behind,” she says. “I’ve looked up to Tegan and Sara for years, both for their music and what they stand for.” Lights described the collaboration as effortless, with everyone working in sync every step of the way.
Tegan also felt that that harmonious energy was what made releasing the song so significant. “At this stage in our career, we want everything we release to feel grounded and purposeful, but also fun,” she explains. “Community has always been at the heart of what we do, so bringing in other artists to build this track together was an incredible experience.
“Our Year” is a love letter to Vancouver and a lighthearted dig at the city’s current cost of living. The song captures the longing and optimism that come with starting fresh, the hope that things might be different this time, and the tension between what you can and can’t control. Lights describes it, saying “It’s a cheeky way of venting about the economy while still celebrating how far we’ve come and keeping that sense of hope alive.”
The release also follows Tegan Quin’s debut middle-grade novel, Merry Christmess, which is the first book in her new Clementine Twins series. The novel was released September 1 through Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The story is funny, heartfelt, and features themes of family, sisterhood, and holiday chaos. Tegan referred to it as a modern take on The Parent Trap, though the twins already know they’re sisters. She co-created the Clementine Twins with her own twin Sara, who gave her permission for Tegan to tackle this project solo. Tegan has described the project as being a huge leap in her creative journey as her first solo fiction piece. A sequel is already in the works!
The duo has also announced they will be joining Hilary Duff’s tour in 2027. Tickets go on sale on Friday, October 2 at 10:00 AM local time. Visit teganandsara.com for more information and see all dates below.
