Take a minute to remember the late and great Divine
Maybe you should throw on a wig and paint those brows high today in honor of the first drag superstar. No, we are not talking about mother Ru or her new batch of queens that are making their debut on national television tonight. We are talking about the queen of filth, the nastiest bitch in town, the true mother of trash, the beautiful, Divine.
Twenty-eight years ago today, Harris Glen Milstead, better known by his stage name Divine, left our world too soon. Just three weeks after the national release of John Water’s hit Hairspray, in which Divine played Edna Turnblad, the 42-year-old died from an enlarged heart.
For those that don’t know Divine, *side eye* the queer icon was a hairdresser turned drag queen who starred in many films by trash titan John Waters, including Polyester, Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, in which he ate dog poop. Seriously.
If you need a crash course, go watch the documentary I am Divine, and learn your herstory.
This performer made sure he was seen, no matter how weird or queer he was. Lives like his deserve to be honored. So please, put on those chacha heels, eat some Tootsie Rolls, and channel your inner Divine.
