For most cities, Pride is held in June to commemorate the month of the Stonewall riots. Denver is no exception. Dubbed PrideFest, Denver hosts the biggest LGBT event in the entire state.
When Pat Barrington first came out as a lesbian to her mother, the response she got would be shockingly uncommon today. “You’re just like me,” Barrington’s mother told her – “except you’re doing what you want. You’re doing what I always wanted to do.”
The protest they called for would be born of the revolutionary spirit of 1960s America, and would become a tradition and evolve into today’s Pride parades and festivals.
