Sweethearts candies celebrates gay love
Necco, the candy maker that is most well known for their sweetheart candies, the Valentine’s favorites that have cute little love messages engraved in the sugary confections, is celebrating it’s 150th anniversary with a message of progression and love. Lots and lots of love.
Their newest two minute ad focuses on an elderly gay couple from Texas, Jack and George, who after more than 50 years were able to get married after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. This year, they are celebrating their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.
Way to drown our tear ducts, Necco.
Necco CEO Michael McGee told AdWeek, “Our communities are becoming bigger and more connected. For a brand, that means traditional, one-sided communication is not enough. You have to find ways to help consumers participate with your brand and have your conversation become interactive.”
“We spent the day with them in their home and got to know them,” he said. “We just kind of rolled the camera and let them tell their story. When you see how they interact with each other—their strength, their genuineness, their commitment to each other—they are just so endearing.”
This is apparent at the end of the video when Jack and George pick out the sweetheart candy that best represents their love, choosing “Me + You” and “Soulmates.” Check out the video below..
