Stuff Gay People Like: The Reverse Mullet

Fig. 01: Yet somehow, he thinks this haircut will never be an embarrassing memory.

The reverse mullet is sometimes called the “emo,” “scenester” or “hardcore” haircut (when you write out “hardcore;” you should spell it like this: HardXCoXreXXX) and henceforth as the “revullet.” There are countless variations, from front-froes that hardly exceed the 90’s George Clooney flip to the dyed-black Adam Lambert purists.

The revullet is basically a mullet, but backwards; its long in the front, short in the back, occasionally accompanied by eyeliner and black nail polish. It is popular among young people who did not learn their lesson from photographs of their parents with actual mullets, which were also once considered hip and attractive.

Fig. 02: The stealth reverse mullet, not quite as long in the front, tries to trick you into thinking it isn’t a reverse mullet.

Gay people are known for being trendy; they start many fads themselves, while other trends such this one, they adopt in mild form (mostly from lesbians) then pump with steroids to form disturbing Dr. Seuss-like exaggerations. Lots of non-gay people rock the revullet, especially if they have ties to Hollywood, including Kate Gosslein and Zac Effron, as well as those who are distinctly anti-Hollywood, including as many emo kids as you could shake a stick at. The gay manifestations have more variation; some conservative, others are poofier and more extreme.

Most gay people will say they hate the revullet, but if you look close you will see that they actually have one in weakened form. Like the Mullet, which once disguised itself in forms that varied from the rat tail to Dave Coulier-style “it just curls in the back,” the Revullet has countless stealth variations; some preppy, some conservative, some alternative.

The classic revullet is usually loaded with enough hair product to harden and halt a mudslide, and it is not uncommon for empty pomade containers to spark temporary landfill shortages near major metropolitan areas after American Idol tryouts. It is one of a series of fashion mistakes that have at one time or another been popular among gay men and other kinds of hipsters, including the modified-Hitler-mustache of the 1980s and astrology-sign tattoos.
