Stuff Gay People Like: Open Relationships

The first thing a gay man wants you to know about himself is that deep down inside, gay people are just like everybody else. They have the same ability to love, take care of a family, and commit to one partner that any straight person has.

The second thing a gay man wants you to know about himself is that though he is capable of a committed relationship, he’s moved beyond all that stuff,spiritually. With his therapist he came to the understanding that he should celebrate rather than repress his diverse needs, which is why a relationship between two men will exhibit the same jaw-dropping sexual honesty you find in a Woody Allen film.

Gay commitment is a very new-age kind of thing. In the old days, the gay version of marriage was to marry a socially awkward girl and have sex with her every one and a half years, about when it’s time to make another baby. Being wed to a person of the same sex is still unacceptable to all but the most cultured and refined thinkers: the kind of people who get a Master’s degree in film studies, attend a Unitarian Universalist church, have portabella mushroom barbecues with wine on the back porch and grow organic herbs in empty yogurt containers on the kitchen counter.

Naturally, since all those people are in open relationships, gay people become exposed to the idea.
