The infamous Stonewall Inn has announced they will boycott all Anheuser-Busch products in protest of their donations to anti-LGBTQ politicians.
The bar will join a host of other businesses and activists working on the “Keep Your Pride” campaign. The campaign is operated by Corporate Accountability Action, which holds large companies accountable for their responsibility to promote equity and inclusion in this country. This Pride season, they’re taking aim at five huge U.S. companies: Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, General Motors, AT&T, and NBCUniversal.
Stonewall Co-owners Stacy Lentz and Kurt Kelly will also be pouring out their current supplies of Anheuser-Busch beverages to celebrate the beginning of their boycott. “You can’t turn your logo rainbow on social media, call yourself an ally, and then turn around and make donations that fuel hate,” Lentz says in a statement. “There are really no excuses, and companies like Anheuser-Busch need to own up to what they’ve done.”
While Lentz will not hesitate to rid the bar of Busch products, they will proudly keep plenty of other small business beers stocked! Gay Beer, Dyke Beer, and the Brooklyn Brewery’s Stonewall IPA will all be on the menu.
Many corporations this year have been called out for their faux-allyship during Pride Month. Pfizer, Citigroup, Disney, and Spotify are just a few of the other companies that came under fire for their meager attempt to get in on the “rainbow capitalism” game, while still donating to or supporting bigoted public figures.
Anheuser-Busch has been no different, rainbow-washing their products while not-so-covertly donating upward of $35,000 anti-LGBTQ politicians across the nation. In an already record year for trans discriminatory legislation, the beer company’s actions speak volumes to their true nature.
Fifty years after the Stonewall Riots that birthed our modern-day Pride celebrations, the bar returns to it’s roots. What is Pride about if not defending our rights as loud, proud, queer American citizens? If you happen to stop by the Stonewall Inn craving an ice cold brew, ditch the disingenuous, corporate cocktail, and opt for one of their queer beers instead.
