South Dakota’s Republican Governor Vetoed an Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill

Republican South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard just showed us that not all republicans in power are trying to push us queers back into our closets, as he vetoed an antir-trans bathroom bill that would’ve restricted transgender students from accessing the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity.

Although, he might not be fighting for our community, and just looking to save his state the damaging effects that come with passing a bill that conflicts with the Obama administration’s interpretation of federal civil rights law, and would most likely be challenged in court.

His statement does not show affection for trans kids, but shows that he would rather not deal with the repercussions …

If and when these rare situations arise, I believe local school officials are best positioned to address them. Instead of encouraging local solutions, this bill broadly regulates in a manner that invites conflict and litigation, diverting energy and resources from the education of the children of this state.

Regardless of the reason, Daugaard didn’t let this damaging bill pass, and we should respect that. Protecting queer youth should be at the forefront of our issues, as these children are the future of our culture. We’ll take the win.
