No amount of snow can stop Flipturn from putting on three consecutive nights of dancing, celebration, and amazing music in Denver this past weekend, and OFM had the pleasure of attending their show at the Ogden Theatre on March 16. Colorado Springs-based band Richy Mitch and the Coal Miners opened the show with their song “Wet Socks” to get the audience grooving with funky guitar lines and a punchy bass section. Lead singer Mitch Cutts mentioned how full circle this show was for them considering that they have been patrons at the Ogden since before they could remember.

The show starts with a snippet of the cinema classic Dead Poets Society (1989) which lead into their song “Churches,” a song all about discovering your passions. Immediately the crowd was electrified and belting along to each and every word that lead singer Dillion Basse sang to them. However, the crowd went wild during their song “Chicago” off their 2017 EP Heavy Colors where they took over for Basse singing the notable lines:

“I get high in Colorado / With some folks I don’t even know / Who knows where I’ll be tomorrow.”

Drummer Devon VonBalson entered the crowd during “Whales” to let two front row fans hold part of his kit while he continued to play the drum line of the song. Before the band left the stage, bassist Madeline Jarman chimed in to thank the crowd for their energy and mentioned how inviting Denver has been for them through out their career, to the point where it feels like a second home to them here. After hearing roars from the fans the band came out for an encore and added three more songs to their set including “Reptilia” by The Strokes. Members found it hard to leave the stage as they stayed for an extra few moments to pass out drum sticks, set lists, sign posters, and toss some guitar picks into the crowd for some lucky concertgoers.
