‘Shadows Gather THE Archives: 2019–Now’ is Coming to Boulder
Inclusive art gallery East Window Gallery in Boulder, Colorado, presents a wall-to-wall takeover of photographs of drag artists, punks, artists, and other misfits of nightlife. Witness the entire collection of the acclaimed instant photography project, Shadows Gather.
Shadows Gather captures the raw beauty in the underground nightlife scenes of Denver, Portland, and Los Angeles. Shadows Gather will take place from September 5 to October 31, showcasing over 2,000 original Fuji Instax photographs taken from 2019 to the present.
The exhibit offers an opportunity to witness a five-year project that recounts Colorado’s thriving, ever-evolving nightlife scene. In celebration of this major retrospective, limited-edition, unique merchandise will be released exclusively during the exhibition’s run. Following the project’s wildly popular recent exhibit at Meow Wolf Denver, this marks the first complete presentation of the Shadows Gather archive and the artist’s official Boulder debut.
Get to know the artist, Shadow
Known for her haunting, energetic portraits and radical DIY approach, Shadow is a Denver-based instant film photographer often compared to Nan Goldin and Andy Warhol. Shadow uses unconventional techniques: pairing a Fuji Instax Neo Classic Mini with iPhone flashlight lighting to create raw, immediate images that preserve moments often overlooked. Recently, Shadow has added to her photographic arsenal by incorporating disposable 35mm cameras, further adding a nostalgic, unpolished vibe to her images.
Since launching the Shadows Gather series in 2019, Shadow has gained significant and well-deserved recognition. She has been featured in Dazed Magazine, the Denver Post, on the cover of Westword, and voted Best Underground Nightlife Photographer in Denver.
You can often find her haunting abandoned warehouses, where she’s known for organizing some of Denver’s best underground parties, drag shows, and photography socials. I highly suggest you follow her on Instagram and support this promising local artist!
“Nightlife is culture, and culture deserves an archive. Instant film makes that possible. This is the largest Instax nightlife archive ever exhibited—thousands of portraits, six years of underground culture, finally seen all at once,” says Shadows.
