Same-Sex Marriages Begin in Kansas

When the Supreme Court refused to hear cases on same-sex marriage, default rulings took precedent in several circuit court districts. Kansas was included within that decision, but as there was no specific state ruling, lawmakers needed to carve out specifics on handling marriage equality. In the meantime, Kansas had filed an emergency appeal to prevent same-sex marriage from moving forward.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor also issued an order requesting a stay on same-sex marriage which was denied.

After the Supreme Court issued a statement allowing same-sex marriages to begin, at least four Kansas counties have begun issuing same-sex marriage license applications (Kansas has a three-day waiting period in place from application to issuance of licenses).
