Scarf savvy: hot trends of 2012

From young to old, preppy to punk, and anything in between: scarves are a surefire way to make a fashion statement – and keep warm. There are many styles to choose from but we’ve found some of the hottest trends to wrap you up in style. Whether you prefer high-end accessories from a department store like Macy’s, one-of-a-kind pieces through a local designer or affordable options online, start with these.

“A lot of guys stock their winter wardrobe with basic sweaters, waffle knit Henleys and long-sleeved tees,” said Maggie Thistleton, style editor with Affordable Scarves. “A plaid, striped or checkered scarf pairs well with a solid-colored basic – instant pizzazz!” While it may seem like such a simple thing, a scarf really can dress up an outfit. Like any other accessory, a scarf adds the finishing touch to your ensemble.

Durand Guion, Macy’s vice president and men’s fashion director, agrees that scarves are an easy way to add to your wardrobe basics. “In cooler temperatures we tend to cover ourselves with outerwear – often in a solid dark color,” he said. “Show your personality and stand out from the crowd with a scarf that adds color, texture and contrast. It does for men what a statement handbag can do for a woman.”

While you’re out shopping, look for scarves that complement your personal style. For instance, a plaid or hounds-tooth scarf is perfect for the preppy guy, while a fringed and checkered scarf is much like the cat’s meow to the eclectic hipster. Meanwhile, the outdoorsman might look for warmth and functionality, but in earthy tones that accompany his tastes.

“Scarves are such an interesting accessory because even though they are just a chunk of fabric, they have the ability to dress up or tone down a look,” said Stacie Grissom, style editor with Affordable Scarves. “Scarves are functional and fab at the same time – not many accessories do such double-duty. And you don’t have to pay an Hermes fortune to look sharp.”

As with any accessory, it’s also important to look for something that makes you feel confident. “Go for colors and prints you’re comfortable wearing and can easily match with other pieces in your wardrobe,” Guion said. “A confident man is a stylish man, and, if he’s confident in Folk and Fair Isle prints, he’ll not only be stylish, but very on-trend, too.”

In addition to popular Folk and Fair Isle prints (Denim & Supply and Club Room have a great selection of these at Macy’s), this winter also is all about knitted chunky scarves in varying lengths and widths. Guion suggests expanding your options by grabbing a few solid scarves (Calvin Klein has some stylish choices) that work well with formal evening looks. “Also, don’t be afraid to mix and match prints,” he said. “Yes, you can wear your Folk and Fair Isle print scarf with your plaid shirt.”

Also, look for the color-blocking trend of 2011 to carry into 2012, but in pastel pastry colors. “Color-blocking two or three colors will be über chic,” said Sarah Heckle, style editor with Affordable Scarves. “We also see the athletic look growing more prominent in 2012 with white, black and red tones. Design details include spades, stripes and even zippers – the bolder the better.”

Speaking of bold, Francis Roces – a local designer that started KimonoDragons in 1999 – likes to combine Asian flare, retro sense and modern twists to create unique clothing for women and men. While he also notices the trend toward knits in earthy tones, he believes it’s important to look for non-traditional scarves that show your individuality. “Scarves can be fun, edgy or colorful without your lifestyle being questioned. The biggest trend is scarves that can multi-task. I’m seeing scarves with hoods and pockets, or scarves made from non-traditional materials like reclaimed clothing.”

Even if our first concern is to fight the cold during these winter months, it doesn’t mean we can’t look good in the process. Whether you choose to shop for an upscale scarf from the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, unique pieces from a local designer, or wallet-friendly styles online, just make sure you’re not caught in the cold with a bare neck.
