It turns out that when Sara Bareilles said “something’s coming soon,” she really meant soon and not the “whenever” that singers usually seem to mean.
Wednesday, June 3, Bareilles sent out an email message to everyone who signed up for updates.
It reads: “My new record, Good Grief, a love letter to the hardest chapter of my life, will be out August 28. I’m so grateful to every loving person who held the weight of this time with me, and for me, when I couldn’t hold it myself. And to all of you … thank you for waiting. I am grateful for YOU. I am more of who I am meant to be because of this very tender, very soulful, very good grief.”
She goes on to tell the recipient about her new single “Home” that is out now (Personally, I am already on my second listen of the track—of what I assure you will be many): “Home” is out today. It was inspired by a vulnerable and honest conversation about grief between Anderson Cooper and Stephen Colbert that really resonated with me. Hearing their stories of loss, I started feeling more courageous to tell mine. “Tell me your story; I’ll tell you mine.” For me, this encapsulates the message of this record—sharing the thing that’s the most true, and through that building threads of connection between you and the people around you. It’s why we’re all here.
Naturally Bareilles follows this with an announcement of the upcoming Good Grief tour: “Which is why after seven years, I am so excited to share space with you again, and to sing these stories to, and hopefully with you. The Good Grief Tour will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday, June 10, but my mailing list (aka you!) will get access to pre-sale tickets on Monday June 8 at 12 p.m. local.”
The Good Grief tour will stop at Denver’s Bellco Theatre on October 4.
Bareilles then goes on to announce that Good Grief is available for preorder, and all albums ordered through her webstore will have their proceeds donated to The National Alliance On Mental Illness in support of their life-saving mental health support, education, and advocacy. In addition, all VIP ticket upgrades with be donated to NAMI and, through partnership with Plus1, $1 of every ticket purchased to the Good Grief tour will go directly to The Jed Foundation to support their work protecting emotional health and preventing suicide among teens and young adults.
She ends the letter: With all the love and grief I’ve got-Sara xo
In an earlier teaser video posted on Facebook, Bareilles wrote that “Home” was her most personal song yet—“unlike all my other stuff.” I thought she was just being cheeky—Anyone who knows her music at the level I do knows that all her work is deeply personal. It’s just the way she is. I’m starting to think that I underestimated her, listening to “Home” for the fifth time today (It’s only 10:20 a.m. and the song released at 10 MST) and trying not to cry.
Good Grief releases August 28. In the meantime, you’re more than welcome to cry along to “Home” with me. I’ve posted the official audio YouTube video below.
