‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Releasing Documentary Based on Season 13

Better think again if you thought Ms. Rona would stop RuPaul’s Drag Race!

VH1 announced yesterday that they will air a special documentary event, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Corona Can’t Keep A Good Queen Down, on Friday, February 26 in place of the weekly episode. The special will follow the iconic show as they taped their historic 13th season during the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a statement from Viacom, the special will “capture the raw emotions surrounding the extraordinary experience; from the combination of hope and anxiety of the early days, to creative challenges prepping and executing the show, and an ultimate sense of celebration and gratitude.”“In the face of a global pandemic that shutdown film and television production around the world, the resilience and ingenuity of this season’s queens made herstory as one of the very first productions to be shot in the age of the pandemic,” the statement continues.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Corona Can’t Keep A Good Queen Down will feature new interviews with the queens, behind the scenes footage, casting reels, and a look at the precaution the production team had to take in order to keep everyone on set safe during these unprecedented times.

It will also show how Drag Race introduced new safety and health protocols to keep special guest judges like Nicole Byer, Loni Love, and Jamal Sims safe while they joined the show.

“You thought Drag Race was gonna go away? No darling,” Symone joked in the preview for the special.

“I’ve been tested, my hands are washed, I’ve been quarantined,” Kandy Muse exclaimed. “It’s going to be an exciting ride!”

In addition to filming during the pandemic, season 13 is also historic because of some of the contestants. Audiences were introduced to Tamisha Iman, the legendary house mother of the Iman Dynasty, and Gottmik, the show’s first trans masculine performer.

Last week, a quarantine special documentary of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK aired where the queens sent in self-filmed footage from their time off. The show had to stop midseason and took a seven month break because of the pandemic.

This week’s episode of season 13 will show the queens recording lyrics and learning choreography for “Social Media: The Unverified Rusical,” and on March 5, audiences can look forward to the remaining girls impersonating their favorite celebrities for the iconic “Snatch Game.”
