Review: Mariano Biasin’s Queer Coming-of-Age Film ‘Sublime’
Argentinian Writer and director Mariano Biaisin will debut of his feature-length film titled Sublime across North America on June 20 via DVD, cable, Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu. Sublime is a coming-of-age drama featuring lead actor Martín Miller alongside co-lead Teo Inama Chiabrando, Azul Mazzeo, and Joaquín Arana. The story portrays a touching perspective on first loves as Martín Miller and Teo Inama Chiabrando’s characters form an unbreakable bond.
Martín Miller, who plays a shy, 16-year-old Manuel, forms a garage rock band with his best friend Felipe, played by Teo Inama Chiabrand, and other friends in their small, coastal town. Manual and Felipe’s relationship intensifies as they began making music, and Manuel begins to feel strained as Felipe begins to date a girl. As Manuel also begins to see a girl, he confusingly suppresses his sexual feelings for Felipe and eventually has to confront the feelings inside of him and come to terms with his relationship with Felipe.
Following a highly successful run on the global queer film festival circuit, Sublime premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, initiating a worldwide screening tour, including BFI Flare, Outfest, Rainbow Reel Tokyo, and AFI Latin American Film Festival.
The coming-of-age drama took home the Sebastiane Latino Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize in the Ibero-American Competition at the Seattle International Film Festival.
The film runs for 100 minutes and is available in Spanish with English subtitles. The DVD of Sublime will include bonus features such as an exclusive Interview with Mariano Biaisin, audio commentary with Mariano Biaisin and Martín Miller, stills and behind-the-scenes photo reel, three music videos, the making of Sublime featurette, and Cinephobia trailers titled Amor Bandido, Fireworks, The Latent Image, and Lie with Me.
