Rep. Nancy Mace Can’t Stop Saying Transphobic Slurs
Warning: the article below discusses transphobic slurs.
Trans people live rent free in the mind of South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace (R), who cannot stop saying slurs for the life of her. Unlike the many politicians who came before her with slurs in hand, she also has yet to apologize.
Mace is well known for her anti-trans stance and legislation, recently gaining attention for her attempt to segregate public bathrooms, putting a sign on the woman’s restroom stating it was for “biological women only.” This was shortly after the election of Rep. Sarah McBride, the first transgender Representative.
She’s used the slur three times this week, mostly on video, released on X. The first was in relation to the office sign in book at the Supreme Court, which was allegedly defaced by protesters. As she hands the book over, she states, “Oh, this is the trannies.” She used it again after a protest by trans activists Chelsea Manning and Raquel Willis. They had a sit-in protest against the bathroom policy in the Supreme Court being pushed by Mace and House Speaker Mike Johnson. The activists were taken away in zip tie hand cuffs. Mace felt the need to visit the jail they were taken to and read them their Miranda rights, starting off her speech and the video by calling them “tranny protesters.” Later, on X, she posted what she must have thought was a sick burn, stating “(t)he trannies came, they saw, and they did not conquer during their protest.”
The posts were moderated by X soon after being posted, though they remain up and visible with a moderation warning. They now have a banner that states they violate X’s hateful conduct rules, but remained up for the public’s benefit. Mace threw a fit, tagging owner of X, Elon Musk, complaining of being “censored.”
Neither Republican nor Democratic colleagues of Mace have spoken against her, which raises eyebrows and questions. Some believe that transphobic slurs are held to a different standard, as transphobia has become a rampant and crucial part of the current GOP. Some think the Democrats are holding back due to Rep. Sarah McBride saying that Mace’s bathroom antics and slurs are a distraction, and not to pay it any mind. The only one to speak up thus far was Florida Rep. Alejandro Frost, stating what we probably all are thinking, “People who use this type of despicable language should not be leading anyone.”
