‘Real O’Neals’ Star Noah Galvin apologizes for ‘Brazen And Hurtful’ interview & we’re not sure why

The Real O’Neals star Noah Galvin apologized on Twitter Thursday night for his controversial comments about Hollywood and the queer community that appeared in an interview on Vulture.com earlier in the day.

We respect his decision to apologize, but we’re not sure why it was necessary. Noah was responding to the questions in an honest and true-to-self way. And the points he made were valid. Let’s take a look at some of his comments. When asked about Colton Haynes he said …

That’s not coming out. That’s fucking pussy bullshit. That’s like, enough people assume that I sleep with men, so I’m just going to slightly confirm the fact that I’ve sucked a dick or two. That’s not doing anything for the little gays but giving them more masturbation material.

Where is the lie? In an age where our youth is glued to their phones liking, commenting, and sharing everything celebrities do from taking out the garbage in heels to posting shirtless pics on the beach, giving them authentic queer icons is a must. Colton Haynes is not an authentic queer role model. He baits gay followers with his body, but refuses to come out of the closet. So why are we even talking about him?

I think as wonderful of an actor as Eric Stonestreet is — I’ve never met him, I assume he’s a wonderful guy — he’s playing a caricature of a caricature of a stereotype of stereotype on Modern Family. And he’s a straight man in real life. And as hilarious as that character is, there’s a lack of authenticity. I think people — especially young gay kids — they can laugh at it, and they can see it as a source of comedy, but like, nothing more than that. And I want Kenny to be more than the funny gay kid.

This is not an attack on Eric, who is a brilliant actor, but an observation that his character is perpetrating stereotypes of gay men. Yes, the show is great. Yes, it’s great to see this hilarious character have such a strong following, but his character just gives the straight world a version of a flamboyant gay man that they can laugh at. If we as gay people can’t recognize and criticize that, then these things will not change.

Yeah. Bryan Singer likes to invite little boys over to his pool and diddle them in the fucking dark of night. [Laughs.] I want nothing to do with that. I think there are enough boys in L.A. that are questionably homosexual who are willing to do things with the right person who can get them in the door. In New York there is a healthy gay community, and that doesn’t exist in L.A.

This is directly referencing the legal battles that Singer has faced. Accusations of  sexual assault against actor Michael Egan, then a minor, in the late 1990s surfaced in 2014 just before X-Men Days of Future Past hit theaters. And while the words are hurtful and jarring, the point that was (poorly) made was that we as queers need to support and help one another, and not prey on queer youth. Again, these are issues we must talk about.

We respect Noah. We think that some of his points could have been addressed with a bit more finesse, but this young actor is talking about issues that no one else is. Why? He’s passionate about his community and the people that make it up. He wants to stand up for queer youth. In order to make changes sometimes you have to throw a few bricks. After all, it is Pride Month.
