London-based queer, nonbinary, Irish actor and singer/songwriter JD Kelleher released a new pop single and video, “Dance On Ur Own 2 Feet.”
“Dance On Ur Own 2 Feet” follows JD Kelleher’s best year in music to date, which included their highly acclaimed version of “Over the Rainbow” last summer and two smashing singles. For this single, Kenneher reunited with several Catalan musicians, Jimmy Pinol, David Ibarz, and Marti Rieira. This team topped the Irish Rock Charts in May 2015 during the Marriage Equality referendum with their debut single and video version of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” the lead single from Kelleher’s debut EP, The Ugly Tree. They are also joined by new band member, Alex Badia, on keys and synth.
The single is a bright, cheerful pop anthem that encourages the listener to take control of their lives and potential, as well as to live their best lives as their true self. “Me and the lads are shifting gears here,” says Kelleher. “It’s time to harness the power of pop and make people smile with ‘Dance On Ur Own 2 Feet.’ This is a song about blazing your own trail, standing up for and believing in who you are … giving space to the things you are passionate about and taking what time we have left to celebrate the wonders of living and the unique talents that everybody has. I wanted to write something that would be uplifting and encouraging in these tragically dark days. Obviously, there is a queer theme in all of my songs, but that is just part of the story here. Be true to who you are, and be true to your passions and your loves.”
The video for this vibrant new single is just as positive and uplifting as the song itself, with Kelleher strutting across London’s Millenium Bridge in a gender-affirming moment of joy. Kelleher’s upbeat queer pop is a brilliant example of queer joy, and “Dance On Ur Own 2 Feet” is no exception.
