Preventing Suicide in the LGBTQ+ Community

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

The 2024 Trevor Project’s National Survey found that 39% of LGBTQ young adults have seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, with that figure rising to 46% among transgender and nonbinary young people. LGBTQ+ youth of color reported even higher rates than their white peers. Importantly, queer youth who live in accepting environments attempt suicide at half the rate of those who do not.

As September comes to a close, we want to highlight three ways to support the queer community and prevent suicide.

Create Safe Spaces

Establishing safe spaces for the queer community is crucial. This can include implementing clear anti-discrimination policies that protect LGBTQ+ individuals and using symbols like rainbow flags or stickers to signify a welcoming environment. Such spaces can significantly improve mental health outcomes within the queer community. Everyone deserves a place where they can be their authentic selves without fear.

Education and Awareness

Engage in conversations about LGBTQ+ issues to emphasize the importance of understanding and respect. Educate others on seeking help and breaking down the stigma associated with mental health challenges. Create brochures, pamphlets, and online resources covering topics such as health, rights, and local services for the queer community.

Advocacy

Support policies that protect LGBTQ+ rights and promote equality. Advocate for accurate and diverse representation in media and local organizations. Focus on what feels right for you, whether that’s research, public speaking, or creating art. Your unique skills and community connections can make a difference—there’s no one right way to advocate.

As September ends, we encourage everyone to actively support and prevent suicide within the LGBTQ+ community. By educating ourselves and others, creating safe spaces, and advocating for mental health resources, we can make a meaningful difference.
