Precious Davis will be the first trans woman on Say Yes to the Dress

Trans activist Precious Davis is joining the ranks of trans women taking over our TV’s. In 2015, we saw a whole slew of trans women taking over our tubes and giving the trans movement visibility to the nation as a whole. We had whole series focused on it, and admired the supporting characters that stole the scene.

For the first time in TLC’s show Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta is helping a trans woman pick out her wedding dress. Davis and her fiancé, Myles Brady, both of Hyde Park, will talk about their love story while Davis seeks the perfect gown for their summer wedding during the episode. It will premiere Friday.

The couple, who have been mostly private about their relationship details, decided to do the show for a very simple reason. To share their love story and give more visibility to trans women and men.

“I think that ‘Say Yes to the Dress,’ [there are] always these beautiful, inspiring stories,” Davis told DNAinfo. “We believe that our love story is revolutionary to trans people. We encourage people to believe again in love and that their love doesn’t come in one package. ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ was a really great example for us to use our activism in that way.”

The two will marry this summer at Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago, though they’re keeping details of the ceremony private.

“In terms of my dress, it’s definitely fit for a queen,” Davis said. “It is the epitome of Precious Davis: glamor, glamor, royalty, black royalty. I will be the queen on my wedding. I will be the Dominique Deveraux that I have dreamed of. It is definitely a dress fit for royalty.”

This might not seem like a huge deal. I mean, the show is very obscure with a very niche audience. Some may argue that buying a dress on a reality TV show isn’t activism, but we have a completely different opinion on the matter.

Activism comes in many different ways. There’s activism focused on changing laws and regulations. There’s activism focused on ending discrimination and making the voices of the oppressed heard. But, activism also comes in the way of showing the world that the oppressed are human people. They fall in love. They get married. They lead functional, contributing lives.

If the show reaches one person whose mind is changed because of Precious, then her job is done.
