Podcast Host Mat George Dies in Hit and Run

Co-host of the podcast She Rates Dogs, 26-year-old Mat George, has died following a hit-and-run collision in Beverly Hills, Saturday, July 17.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is currently investigating the incident and have released some details so far in the hopes of anyone with information coming forward. The incident occurred at 2:20 a.m. early Saturday morning. George was not walking in a marked crosswalk before being struck by a white BMW. Without stopping, the vehicle continued eastbound and is still being searched for. George was pronounced dead on the scene.

Michaela Okland, George’s friend and co-star, announced his death in a tweet later that day. Her tweet states, “I would rather you guys hear this from me than a news article. Mat was killed in a hit and run last night. I don’t really have any other words right now. I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can’t do it right now.”

The openly gay George was a comedian and entertainer who through his work hoped to make LGBTQ people around the world feel a little less alone. He found his work the most fulfilling when members of the LGBTQ community reached out to him and described the impact he had on their lives.

The response from fans of the podcast as well as people within the queer community was immense as many have made social media posts offering their condolences and their personal experiences with the podcast and Mat George. His joy and laughter lives on in the recordings and memories they have made.

The LAPD is still investigating this case, and urge anyone with information to come forward. Anyone looking to share tips can call the West Traffic Division Office at 213-473-0222, or contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
