ONCE: Playing the Denver Center for the Performing Arts
“It doesn’t suck!” was one of the first few lines uttered in the show. And they weren’t wrong …
Once is a musical stage adaptation based on the 2007 film of the same name by John Carney. Like the film, the music and lyrics were created by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová.
Once is not your usual Broadway musical. From the moment the audience enters the theater, the fourth-wall is obliterated when anyone and everyone (within reason) is welcomed on stage, into the Dublin Pub to purchase an actual drink, while the cast of actors and musicians serenade them with a few high-spirited Irish folk songs. Soon everyone is ushered back to their seats so that the show can begin. It doesn’t take long before the audience effortlessly connect to each of the very real, very likable characters, singing and playing their hearts out, literally. Each and every song is just as mesmerizing as the next — vicariously brought together through their music, following their dreams, thinking about what once was and what once might have been, with that special-someone we all once knew.

Once is a truly original Broadway experience that music lovers will cherish. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage.
Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights, but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, Once draws you in from the very first note and never lets go.
Once is playing the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for a very limited time from May 24 – 29. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased online.
