Photo Gallery: Town Hall Takeover in Remembrance of Jax Gratton
On Tuesday, August 12, Lakewood City Hall became the site of a powerful community takeover in remembrance of Jax Gratton, a beloved transgender hairstylist whose death remains shrouded in unanswered questions. Friends, family, and advocates filled the chambers demanding transparency, accountability, and, most urgently, an independent oversight board with transgender representation to review the investigation.
Jax was last seen in mid-April. Her body was not discovered until nearly two months later, found below a second-story apartment window in an alley in Lakewood. The coroner’s autopsy listed her cause and manner of death as “undetermined,” citing possibilities ranging from a fall to being pushed. By then, the delay had erased critical evidence, leaving a trail of frustration and grief in its wake.
The LGBTQ+ community has rallied fiercely around Jax’s memory, but also against the way her case has been handled. Missteps, including police repeatedly deadnaming her, have only deepened the pain. Lakewood’s police chief has since apologized and pledged further sensitivity training, but advocates say that isn’t enough.
At Tuesday’s town hall, Jax’s mother sent a message through a neighbor, Amanda Phillips:
“Instead of finding solace in Jax’s memories, my days are full of media calls, autopsies, research, managing rumors, coordinating with the police, and advocacy. No one should have this pain. No mother should need to fight in the midst of heartbreak. We need independent oversight now. The keyword here is independent.”
City Council members, visibly moved by the turnout, signaled that a proposal for oversight is coming. Councilor Isabel Cruz thanked the crowd for speaking up, while Roger Low emphasized that though change feels slow, “We are committed to action.”
For many in the room, that action can’t come soon enough. The gathering was both a memorial and a rallying cry, a demand that Jax’s life, and death, be treated with dignity and respect.
Her name is and always will be Jax. And the community refuses to let her be forgotten.
