Party Hats and Otherworldly Beats: Meow Wolf Turns Five

Alissha RBy Alissha RSeptember 30, 20267 Mins Read

Once a month, for one night, Meow Wolf Denver becomes a no-kids zone. But September’s Adulti-Verse, its adults-only night, was extra special: Convergence Station was celebrating its fifth anniversary. On September 19t, the exhibit’s birthday party brought guests 21 and older together for an evening of music, art, and exploration across its four worlds.

The celebration was impossible to miss even before guests reached the entrance. As evening settled over Meow Wolf Denver, a long line stretched along the building beneath its glowing sign, continuing into the shadows of the overpass. Even from outside, the crowd made it clear that plenty of people wanted to spend their Saturday night celebrating Convergence Station’s fifth birthday.

Inside, the wait gave way to check-in. One guest held out his arm for a wristband while staff welcomed the next arrivals, including a worker dressed for the occasion in a party hat. Nearby, two guests waited for the elevator that would take them into the exhibit. After the long line outside, they were finally on their way into Convergence Station’s birthday celebration.

The elevator opened onto a party already in motion. Near the entrance, guests gathered around a table lined with bottles and small cups before continuing into C-Street, where artist Juhb painted a colorful portrait against a bright pink background. Nearby, DJ Reed Fox provided the soundtrack, wearing a flower-covered shirt as he worked the controls.

The music soon brought guests together. One older woman was dancing when a younger guest joined her, and the two shared a moment on the floor while Juhb continued painting behind them. Others brought the birthday spirit into their outfits: two guests posed in party hats, colorful decorations, and clothes covered in playful details. Their looks felt right at home in Convergence Station, where dressing for the occasion can be part of the fun.

The artist market in Ossuary gave guests a chance to meet some of the people who helped create Convergence Station. Cami Galofre was the first artist to welcome visitors, displaying prints beside Macarenia, the colorful installation she led for the exhibit. Its rippling walls and hanging strands surround visitors in pink, purple, and blue. Galofre named the work after an aquatic plant that gives Colombia’s Caño Cristales river its vivid colors. Meeting her beside the world she helped build made the birthday celebration feel especially personal.

The market also made room for artists who had not worked on the original exhibit. Guests browsed tables of glowing floral art, colorful sculptures, and prints featuring creatures both familiar and strange. Some artists stood beside their work and chatted with visitors, turning a walk-through Ossuary into a chance to discover something new. Five years after Convergence Station opened, the birthday party celebrated the artists who built it while welcoming more creativity into its worlds.

Among the collaborating artists was Chops Wanderweird, who created Room 441, The Inner Sanctum of Saint Itized. At the market, Wanderweird displayed colorful prints of their hand-painted video game mandalas, giving guests a chance to take home a piece of the imagination

Andrea Thurber, lead artist for Ruptured Time in Ossuary, also had a table at the market. Alongside her own colorful artwork, she displayed illustrated tote bags and smaller items for guests to browse. Like the other collaborating artists, Thurber offered visitors a chance to meet someone whose work they could encounter elsewhere in Convergence Station.

The final collaborating artist at the market was DAS, or Douglas A. Schenck, who contributed to The Awakening of a Forgotten Past. His table was crowded with intricate sculptures made from mechanical parts, including creatures with elaborate faces and textured bodies.

Beyond the market tables, Ossuary was busy with guests browsing art, stopping for drinks, and finding their way through the glowing archways. After meeting the artists, there was still plenty left to explore. After all, the birthday party celebration continued beyond the market.

Leaving the market behind, guests headed up to Sips (with a Z) for music bingo with Spicy Joe. Wearing a birthday party hat and holding a microphone, the host welcomed a room full of players gathered around tables with bingo cards, pens, and colorful cocktails. Laughter and raised hands kept the room lively, offering another way to join the celebration while taking a break from exploring.

Back on C-Street, Levi Double U took over the DJ booth, keeping the birthday celebration moving. Guests gathered beneath the neon storefront signs to dance and mingle, with one partygoer lifting a flow star overhead. Surrounded by the street’s colorful scenery, the crowd made this corner of Convergence Station feel like a party all its own.

The next stop was Numina, where another line waited among towering trees and oversized blooms. Beneath the shifting colored lights, guests queued toward a brightly lit table tucked into the otherworldly forest. Something had caught their attention, but what was worth lining up for this time?

The answer was a chance to make their own birthday party hats. Artist Jodi Stuart welcomed guests to a 3D pen craft station, where a demonstration showed how colorful strands could become something guests could wear and take home. The table displayed an assortment of examples, from orange and yellow cones to a quirky creature with multiple eyes, oversized ears, and pointed teeth.

Then it was the guests’ turn to get creative. Using cone-shaped forms, they layered strands into their own designs and added playful details to give each hat its own personality. Some leaned in to watch the process closely, while others concentrated on guiding their pens around the cones. In a world filled with imaginative art, the station gave visitors a chance to become artists themselves, and leave with a birthday souvenir they had helped bring to life.

On Numina’s second level, high among the trees, guests discovered a small pop-up bar tucked beside the winding walkway. Here, they could pick up a souvenir Adulti-Verse cup and try the birthday-themed Bearrits Bellini. The $14 cocktail combined Family Jones vodka, clarified lime juice, papaya nectar, and honey simple syrup, topped with Sprite, a festive refreshment surrounded by Numina’s glowing foliage.

As the night began winding down, the celebration continued back at Sips (with a Z), where music bingo had given way to karaoke. Guests traded their bingo cards for a turn at the microphone. One singer reached toward the audience as listeners raised their hands, keeping the room lively as Convergence Station’s birthday party neared its end.

From the artist market in Ossuary to music bingo and karaoke at Sips (with a Z), Convergence Station’s fifth birthday gave guests plenty of ways to celebrate. Reed Fox and Levi Double U kept C-Street moving, where dancing, elaborate party outfits, and a shared moment between an older guest and a younger dancer brought the celebration to life.

In Numina, Jodi Stuart’s 3D pen craft station proved a hit, drawing a line of guests eager to create their own birthday hats. Alongside souvenir cups, birthday cocktails, and artwork from the market, those handmade creations offered something to carry home from a night spent exploring.

Five years after opening, Meow Wolf Denver is still giving visitors new discoveries. Its latest addition, Heirloomarium, opened September 1st near the meeting point of Eemia and the Ossuarian catacombs. The interactive room invites guests to investigate strange fossils and bring fictional creatures to life through a research system built into its cavernous surroundings. Included with general admission, it offers returning visitors another corner of Convergence Station to explore.

Keep an eye on Meow Wolf’s website for upcoming Adulti-Verse nights, events, and art announcements. The fifth birthday party may be over, but there are still more memories to make, and more worlds to get lost in.
