Paris Mayor Slams Olympic Criticism
Anne Hidalgo, Paris’s mayor and the mastermind behind the city’s 2024 Olympic Summer Games, has taken a sledgehammer to the critics who accused the Games’ opening ceremony of sacrilegious shenanigans. These critics, who clearly missed the memo on fun, were up in arms about a segment they claimed was an affront to Christianity.
The fuss centered on a Dionysian feast-themed performance that featured a lesbian DJ, drag performers, and a guy who looked like he’d been snatched from a fairy tale—complete with blue skin and a crown of foliage. Conservative critics, including some high-profile U.S. figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump, saw this as a divine disaster. They apparently mistook it for a reinterpretation of “The Last Supper” by a reimagined Da Vinci.
Hidalgo wasn’t about to let this uncalled-for critique spoil her fun. She made it abundantly clear that she had no patience for the reactionaries and far-right individuals trying to stir up trouble. She expressed immense pride in how the opening ceremony showcased Paris to the world, noting the city’s unique blend of admiration and animosity.
Paris, she pointed out, is a beacon of freedom and a safe haven for LGBTQI+ folks, where people coexist harmoniously. The far-right’s message was thoroughly trounced by the Games and the opening ceremony, marking something extraordinarily positive for the city.
In the controversial segment, DJ Barbara Butch rocked a silver halo-ish headdress while spinning tracks amidst a troupe of fabulous drag performers and dancers. The scene reached its peak with a surreal climax featuring a man dressed in an extravagant mix of blue, orange, and foliage, arriving on a silver platter.
Olympic organizers have maintained that the performance was a homage to Dionysian revelry and French gastronomy, not a deliberate reinterpretation of religious scenes. The artistic director behind the ceremony emphasized that the goal was to spread a message of love and inclusion, not division.
So there you have it: Paris’ grand Olympic debut was less about divine supper remixing and more about celebrating diversity and French flair. The only thing getting served on a silver platter was a big, hearty portion of inclusivity. Bon appétit!
