Opioid Use Issues? Magnolia Medical Group has Answers.

When it comes to opioid use disorder, a person has different options for treatment. Should one choose an abstinence model of care or a medication-assisted treatment model of care? Once this decision is made, a person’s options may also be directed by one’s financial resources and whether a person must remain employed while seeking treatment.

Those seeking recovery using an abstinence model may choose to go into a medical detox program and follow it with a stay at an inpatient treatment program (where they will be housed for 30 to 90 days in a controlled environment that limits their access to controlled substances and provides intensive, substance-abuse therapy.) Then, they may follow with outpatient behavioral health therapy either individually or in group sessions.

This treatment modality has the benefit that all medications and their potential side-effects have been removed from the patient’s body. The abstinence model of care has the disadvantage that It can be difficult for many patients to prevent relapse because the body’s physical dependence on an opioid is not fully addressed in this model of care. For many patients, the incidence of relapse is higher.

Another treatment modality is to use the medication-assisted treatment model of care. This modality of treatment puts the patient under the care and supervision of a physician or medical provider. After an initial evaluation, the medical provider prescribes the patient a medication that helps drastically reduce the patient’s physical craving for opioids while also providing substance-abuse counseling to address the accompanying and underlying behavioral motivations for substance abuse.

This program has a number of advantages that include: an ability to allow a patient to continue with employment and regular life while receiving treatment, considerably lower cost to begin and continue treatment, regular visits with accountability provided by a medical provider, and a safe medication that helps the patient reduce the physical dependence on opioids. Patients using a medication-assisted treatment model of care, combined with substance abuse therapy, have been clinically proven to have the lowest incidence of relapse.

Magnolia Medical Group is a Denver-based, outpatient, medication-assisted treatment program specializing in treating drug addiction. Our medical group was founded in 2016 by Dr. Pradeep Raj Rai, MD. He leads a team of providers using a judgement-free, integrated, harm-reduction model of care: Buprenorphine and Naltrexone medications used in conjunction with counseling, peer support, and nurse case management—gold standards of treatment tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

The practice has experienced, addiction-board-certified physicians who, in concert with master’s-level, licensed, addiction counselors, create and maintain treatment plans tailor-made for each of their patients. An LPN case manager follows up and helps guide the patient in between visits to follow the treatment plan and obtain additional resources of care.  A psychiatric NP is on staff to help patients address their co-occurring, mental health needs.

Patients and their families are encouraged to attend weekly, peer support and family support groups. Magnolia Medical Group is proud to be a physician-led, Denver-based, specialty clinic focused exclusively on treating all substance abuse, in a comprehensive, integrated model of care.
