Non-Psilocybin Mushroom Edibles Linked to 158 Illnesses, FDA Finds

Act 626

The FDA issued a recall of Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars, gummies, and infused cones following reported illnesses. As of August 30, the edibles are linked to 158 illnesses across 32 states, with 63 cases requiring hospitalization, and two potentially linked deaths.

Concerns arose in late May and early June when individuals across four states reported falling ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz edibles. Symptoms include nausea, seizures, abnormal heart rate, and loss of consciousness. There is one reported illness in Colorado as of this article.

The FDA recommends consumers discard any products they may have in their homes. Contact Poison Control if you or someone you know has ingested Diamond Shruumz products. Retailers should remove products from their shelves and contact the recall service immediately. Several Colorado smoke shops have been listed in the recall, including 8 Denver stores.

Diamond Shruumz advertise their products as microdosing edibles. None of their products contain psilocybin, the psycho-active chemical in magic mushrooms. However, several products have been found to contain psilocin, which is derived from psilocybin and is a Schedule I-controlled substance. Tested products also contained Pregabalin, a prescription drug, acetylpsilocin, and muscimol, among other compounds. Muscimol is a psychotropic chemical that can alter a person’s mood and emotions, according to the CDC.

Diamond Shruumz say in a press release: “Due to consumers becoming ill after consuming the entire chocolate bar and some products containing higher levels of Muscimol than normal, it is crucial that all of our consumers refrain from ingesting this product while we, alongside the FDA, continue our investigation as to what is the cause of the serious adverse effects.” Not all tested products contained muscimol, and the FDA has made no claims on what caused the reactions. Product testing continues.

OFM encourages safe and responsible use of mind-altering substances. For more information on Colorado’s legalization of psilocybin, read “All Bout Mushrooms” in our issue, Fungays and Fairies.
